Research:

My program of research has focused on enabling the full occupational and community participation of people with disabilities, and in particular those who experience mental illness. This has included the study of the lived experience of people with mental illness in important domains of daily life - work, school, home and family. It has also included the study of models and approaches to enable participation of those who experience high levels of social marginalization.

My recent research has included:

  • advancing a program of research related to social enterprise and disability including: evaluating the effectiveness of work integration social enterprises in the mental health sector; development and evaluation of WISE in international, low resource settings; the identification of critical elements of WISE’s; the study of how WISE’s impact societal stigma associated with mental illness.
  • contributing to the development of a framework for activity health and well-being to be used in a range of public health initiatives (www.dolivewell.ca).
  • contributing to the development and evaluation of a range of intervention approaches to enabling the recovery of occupational and community participation of people living with serious and persistent forms of mental illness. These include, for example: Action Over Inertia, an intervention to address the profound activity disengagement of people living with serious mental illness; Occupational Connections, an intervention directed to enabling the community occupational participation of people who are receiving treatment in in-patient mental health services; the study of novel intervention approaches directed to enable the recovery and transition to community for individuals with long histories of hospitalizations for mental health concerns; the development of approaches to support recovery-oriented practice in in-patient mental health settings; the evaluation of strengths-based case management in community mental health settings.
  • contributing to the development and evaluation of focused initiatives to reduce the stigma of mental health and addictions in workplaces and educational settings with a view to supporting the creation of accepting, diverse and inclusive contexts for community participation.
